Hi,
I just wanted to wish the ESUG participants a nice conference. Please do let us know of any meaningful news.

A first one: Thanks to Igor, Roassal is working with Athens. The rendering are amazing. The screenshot confirms this. Unfortunately, text rendering is missing...

Excellent!
Can we get the VM+Cairo that renders this out of the box?
Also, why is there no text? I thought this was supported for basic text (I.e. no paragraphs with Pango)

Yes. The VM should be available from: https://ci.lille.inria.fr/pharo/view/Cog/job/NativeBoost-Cog-VM/Architecture...
Igor, can you confirm this please?

Good question. Apparently it is not supported. Igor, can you provide a schedule when this will be available?
Cheers, Alexandre

This is just the VM. You still have to install Cairo, and this is not trivial for regular users. There was a plan to bundle Cairo with the VM. So, the question is if there is any progress in this area.

Igor, is it really so that Athens does not support basic text rendering?

No i can't. That VM does not includes cairo libs by default.
And while having matrix-builds is a plus, now it is really hard to have different settings per a target platform, because everything is dumped into a single bash script.. And that annoys me a lot. We can speak about it tomorrow (yes, i cced you guys on purpose ;)

It behind the schedule. Frankly, i was planning having it weeks ago. But i was unable to deal with it in time.. So, all i can say it is one of my top priority tasks today.
Cheers, Alexandre

Good. The crowd wants it :). And after we will integrate it in Morphic.
we need a text model that can be stream to rendering engines and support editing (and attributes).

Could you clarify "amazing"? The most obvious is you are referring to the speed, but made quality or something else.
Anti-aliasing is also offered by Athens. Drawings are now smoother.
What is the schedule for Athens on non-mac platforms? in particular MS Windows. or should I just get a Mac?
No idea. Igor?

No idea either. I have a plan. And i stick to it. No scheduling , sorry. I'm not that sort of a man. What i was trying to do the days after i came from vacation was doing everything work or all platforms (and MS Windows was #1 in that list).. But i didn't pushed it too far so far..
Because of different events like problems with our jenkins server or changes in VM/NB requiring my attention (and therefore time), and of course because i am too lazy to do it. But i work faster when i know that things i do is needed :) So thanks for a push.
Like today i managed to code a draft version of text rendering using Cairo. But the whole puzzle involves work on 4 things simultaneously: - VM, AsmJit, NB, Athens, Cairo.. and Jenkins .. and i need to cut some time for having fun (like hacking Pharo itself).
Heh, don't think that i am complaining.. I having fun here, but it takes time.
No stress Igor. You're doing an amazing job, really. I am delighted to have pair programmed with you.
We should continue!
Cheers, Alexandre

Guys
I think that you do not understand what is athens. Athens is an object-oriented design for an abstract canvas and ways to interact with it.
This canvas will be instantiate with different backends. - since cairo works on windows the backend Cairo Athens works on Windows Now this is a question of packaging dll and others.
- Now if one day we have a cocoa core framework, the cocoa backend will not work on Windows.
