Subject: Part-time (50%) faculty position in computer science - Software Languages Lab in Brussels
Reason: Post by non-member to a members-only list
Received: Wed Jun 14 13:41:58 2017
The computer science department of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel is offering a part-time position as professor to reinforce its software languages and software engineering branch. The position is published under the heading:
WE/2017/001 - Senior Academic Staff - 50% – Science and Bio-Engineering Sciences - Computer Sciences – Software Language Engineering
on the university's job offers website located at http://vub.talentfinder.be.
The planned starting date for this position is October 1st, 2017. Contract duration is 2 academic years. The deadline for applying is July 24th, 2017. Applications should reach us through the website. The person to contact for further information is:
Viviane Jonckers
Software Languages Lab
email: vejoncke(a)vub.ac.be
phone: +32 2 629 29 67
** Function **
- Research
The selected candidate has to reinforce the research of the Software Languages Lab (SOFT - http://soft.vub.ac.be) which focusses on ‘software language engineering’. The lab is active in programming language research and software engineering research.
We are specifically looking for a candidate who can link these two domains, e.g. by designing new language features or language extensions with a specific focus on modern software engineering problems or by studying the software engineering aspects that emerge from new “nearly mainstream” languages such as Scala, Clojure, Julia, etc.
The candidate’s research methodology can be formalism-based, artefact-driven, or experimental. Candidates whose academic track record shows the ability to combine several methodologies are explicitly welcome.
- Teaching
The teaching assignment may include both general courses on bachelor or master level and more specialized courses on MA level. The exact course list will be negotiated with the candidate and will depend on his/her expertise and language skills.
- Other
The selected candidate will by preference endorse the tradition of the Software Language Lab to focus on interpreted languages with dynamic typing, reflection, modern concurrency models, built-in distribution, etc.
The selected candidate will be included into the management structure of the Software Languages Lab and is expected to actively contribute to the operational aspects and to the further development of the lab. This implies the guidance of PhD and master students, but also starting new projects and applying for funding.
** Profile **
- Ph.D. in Science or Engineering in the domain of Computer Science.
- The candidate can present a strong research portfolio that covers the expertise asked in the job description.
- The candidate has experience with guiding PhD and/or master students. He/she has a proven track record or demonstrable potential for launching new research and for seeking the funds to support it.
- The candidate is expected to endorse the educational vision of the university (full text available on the university website).
- Every first appointment is dependent upon the successful delivery of a teaching session.
- Members of academic faculty with teaching duties are required to prove their command of the teaching language. E.g.: for teaching in English the candidate provides evidence of proficiency in English at C1 level by submitting a language certificate (or a waiver).
- Female candidates are particularly encouraged to apply.
** Additional Information **
- The candidate selected for the 50% faculty position must be available at the university for a period corresponding to two and a half days per week. A regular presence is required to allow for sufficient integration with the research activities of the lab.
- The opportunity exists to combine the 50% faculty position with a 50% researcher position on running projects such that the candidate has a full-time position in the Software Languages Lab. Alternatively, the 50% faculty position can be combined with a position at another research lab, as long as a sufficient availability of the candidate for the Software Languages Lab is guaranteed.

Dear People,
Please note that the deadline for submitting papers
and presentation proposals to the workshop on
ecosystem architectures has been extended to June 14.
The workshop (https://wea.github.io) is this year collocated with
ESEC/FSE. Thus, if you're attending the conference do consider
submitting also to WEA. We'd be excited to see as many SATToSErs
as possible and put the Evolution in Ecosystems!
I attach a visual summary of this announcement just in case
you're more visually inclined :)
Cheers,

Dear all,
Given that this year will be the 10th edition of SATToSE we were thinking of collecting all pictures of all previous events and perhaps doing something fun with it. If you still have such pictures, please add them to the DropBox folder linked below. If you make pictures of the 10th edition in Madrid of course you can add them in the same folder in due time.
Friendly greetings,
Kim Mens
P.S. If you know of people that (should) have such old pictures but are not on this mailing list, feel free to forward them this link.

CALL FOR PAPERS: 11th International Workshop on "Models and Evolution"
Co-located with ACM/IEEE 20th International Conference on Model Driven
Engineering Languages & Systems (MODELS 2017), Austin, Texas, Sept
17-22, 2017
http://www.models-and-evolution.com/
We cordially invite submissions to the 11th International Workshop on
Models and Evolution (ME) held in conjunction with the ACM/IEEE 20th
International Conference on Model Driven Engineering Languages and
Systems (MODELS) at Austin, Texas in September, 2017.
Scope
Software artefacts constantly increase in complexity, variety and
novelty. Environment and business constraints, user requirements and new
insights put additional pressure on their adaptability, availability,
reliability and quality: they continuously need to be up to date. But
evolution issues are critical, complex and costly to manage. They
concern requirements, architecture, design, source code, documentation,
integration or deployment. They also typically affect various kinds of
models (data, behavioral, domain, source code or goal models).
Addressing and managing these varieties of changes is essential. Models
and metamodels, the cornerstone of complex software systems’
abstractions, represent a powerful mean for facing software evolution
challenges by ensuring a more abstract and expressive modeling of
software evolution. They can help and guide software evolution and can
enforce and reduce critical risks and important involved resources. The
workshop puts the focus on Models and Evolution by considering two main
sides: (1) Managing software evolution needs by relying on the
high-level abstraction power of models and metamodels. (2) Managing
model and metamodel evolution needs and the co-evolution of all related
software artefacts by putting attention to their increasing evolution
issues as they become primary artefacts.
ME 2017 will bring together researchers and practitioners to share
experiences in dealing with the various forms of models and evolution.
It combines a strong practical focus with theoretical approaches as
required in any discipline to support engineering practices. ME 2017
targets researchers and practitioners on model-driven engineering to
meet, disseminate and exchange ideas, identify the key issues related to
the problem of models and evolution and explore possible solutions and
future work.

Short description of thesis topic: Cloud computing systems usually exhibit high variability due to the number of choices concerning the selection of cloud providers as well as of their offered cloud services. At the same time, they provide a flexible environment, where resources and services can be provisioned and released on demand. To cope with the high volatility and variability of such systems, the goal of the thesis is to propose a model-based approach for expressing their variability, facilitating their evolution, and exploring the design space of possible solutions. The proposed approach will rely on research advances in dynamic software product lines [1], and will use techniques such as feature modelling to specify and analyse the variabilities and commonalities in cloud computing services and providers at a high level of abstraction [2]. Behavioural aspects of these systems will be modelled using statechart-based design models [3,4], and the technique of design by contract will be used to constrain these models [5]. Semi-automated and interactive tool support will be provided to verify and test structural and behavioural properties over these models. In addition, evolution of these models will be supported. In particular, the research should focus on support for behaviour preserving refactoring and dynamic reconfiguration. The practical use of these techniques to explore and traverse the design space of cloud environments will also be explored by an extension of SALOON tools [2,6] and an experimental validation on cloud evolutions defined by several providers. For example, when reconfiguring a cloud environment, the selected set features (representing cloud providers and services) may have a different impact on performance, costs or reconfiguration time, and optimal reconfiguration paths should be proposed.
