Dear all, I need some volunteers doing (interactive) talks on these two events: MINT: https://www.unibe.ch/studium/studieninteressierte/maturandinnen__und__matur… MIT: https://www.unibe.ch/studium/studienangebote/master/informationstage/index_… For both events: It's about 30 mins, generic title is "A Primer on your Research" (to be refined by you), target group is high school students transitioning towards university. Each of the events could be done by just one group member, but forming a group of 2 could be more fun. Doesn't have to be the same people for both events. Constraint: Language of MINT should be German. There is still plenty of time, so no need to rush. But if you could imagine doing this, please let me know. Best, Timo

Unlike many prior models that release weights without reproducible data pipelines or regard for content-owner rights, Apertus models are pretrained exclusively on openly available data, retroactively respecting robots.txt URL exclusions and filtering for non-permissive, toxic, and personally identifiable content. To mitigate risks of memorization, we adopt the Goldfish objective during pretraining, strongly suppressing verbatim recall of data while retaining downstream task performance. The Apertus models also expand multilingual coverage, training on 15T tokens from over 1800 languages, with ~40% of pretraining data allocated to non-English content. Released at 8B and 70B scales, Apertus approaches state-of-the-art results among fully open models on multilingual benchmarks, rivalling or surpassing open-weight counterparts. Beyond model weights, we release all scientific artifacts from our development cycle with a permissive license, including data preparation scripts, checkpoints, evaluation suites, and training code, enabling transparent audit and extension. Before that, he was a post-doctoral researcher at ETH Zurich, at the Simons Institute in Berkeley, and at École Polytechnique in Paris. He has earned his PhD in Machine Learning and Optimization from ETH Zurich in 2011, and a MSc in Mathematics also from ETH Zurich. SEG Fondue Event on Friday, Nov. 28

Dear SEGies Winter has arrived, which means it’s time to uphold tradition and enjoy a proper fondue together before the year ends. This year’s fondue evening will take place on *Friday, 28 November 2025*, *starting around 17:00*. As this is a privately organized event, costs are covered by participants. If you would like to join the fondue session, please (i) accept this calendar invite and (ii) hand CHF 20 in cash to Yael, Manuel, or Roman (Bögli). This allows us to estimate attendance and take care of procuring food, drinks, and equipment efficiently. Registration deadline is *Wednesday 26. November, 23:59 Bern Time*. Given this is a crowdsourced event, helping hands during the evening with preparation, fondue stirring, and cleanup is appreciated and will be rewarded with extra kudos. Software Engineering Seminar Presentations

Dear all, The end of the semester is approaching, and it's time to start planning the seminar presentations. As always, the most natural presentation dates are the "usual" seminar slots on Tuesday morning, specifically: - Tuesday Dec. 9, from 8:30-12:00 - Tuesday Dec. 16, from 8:30-12:00 If students are not yet ready to present, it's fine to present in January. I propose the following date: - Tuesday, Jan 20, from 8:30-12:00 If needed, we can have a "backup" presentation day in the beginning of February. ACTION ITEM (supervisors): Please discuss the possible dates with your supervised students and just reserve the concrete time slot in our calendar. Per talk, we should reserve 30 mins., split into 15-20 mins presentation and about 10 mins. for Q&A. ACTION ITEM (supervisors): Please also note that we have a "presentation checklist" with some DOs and DONTs, serving as a good starting point for preparing the students for their talk: https://seg.inf.unibe.ch/teaching/resources/presentation-checklist/ ACTION ITEM (all): Please mark the presentation slots in your calendar. Dear all I have added everyone's teaching and supervision activities (minus Seminar supervision, but this is subject to change) on the website, on your personal profile. Please check if I got everything - if there are errors or if I missed anything, let me know. If I don't hear from you, I assume the info is correct. For those wondering why I record this info publicly and prominently: Teaching and supervising students are important parts of academic work, and they are necessary skills, should you intend to pursue a further academic career. So showcasing these skills is beneficial to your resumé. (Also, it's good to do book-keeping and make the info available - that's a testament to a well-organised and transparent group.) Jährliches MAG / Annual Employee Review

Dear all, As the end of the year is approaching, in accordance with university regulations, I should (well, actually have to) do the so-called Annual Employee Review with each of you: https://intern.unibe.ch/dienstleistungen/personal/fuehrung/mitarbeitendenge… "Führungspersonen nehmen gemeinsam mit ihren Mitarbeitenden mindestens einmal jährlich eine Standortbestimmung in Form eines Mitarbeitendengesprächs (MAG) vor. Der Dialog mit Rück- und Ausblick schafft die Grundlage zur vertrauensvollen und transparenten Zusammenarbeit und fördert die kontinuierliche berufliche Entwicklung." Basically means: We have at least one annual meeting (MAG) to reflect on the past year and plan ahead. As part of these meetings, some paper work needs to be done, serving as a guideline and documentation for our discussion. The forms (see attachment) differ a bit depending on your employment: For all doctoral students without an existing doctoral agreement: - Doktoratsvereinbarung.docx (en) - Doctoral Agreement.docx (en) For all scientific staff with employment: - MAGWissenschaftlichesPersonal.docx (de) - MAG_Scientificstaff.docx (en) For all doctoral students without employment: - Standortgespraech.docx (de) - Status review.docx (en) Please take a look at the relevant forms beforehand and think about the individual points. Please keep in mind: - The forms are generic; not every point will apply to your specific situation. - Please do not see this as a mere administrative obligation but as an opportunity to reflect on your progress during the past year and to plan your goals and priorities for the next year. Research outcomes are not always predictable, but having a plan is never wrong ;-) It won't be easy to schedule quite a number of MAGs.
